Chess Team Brings Home 5 Trophies!!!
November 17, 2009, 8:13 pm

The St. Anne’s School Chess Team returned victorious last weekend from Northeast Middle School, bringing back three individual trophies and two team trophies.  Under the sound of heavy gunfire (from a nearby shooting range) in this Soviet Era school, the team persevered, pulling out win after win, round after round.  They all made short work of their opponents for the first three rounds (that is everyone except Erik, who took his sweet time dismantling his opponents), and the Under-500 team pulled ahead.  But the day took its toll, and by the fourth round everyone was struggling to keep it together.  Both teams fell behind with little hope of placing.  They needed to have a big comeback if they wanted to get anywhere near those trophies.

After a few last-minute words from their coaches, the team came back with a very strong last round to give the Under-500 team 14 points and the Under-900 team 11 points  This was just enough to get third place for the Under-500 team and fourth place for the Under-900 team.  Not only did we do well as a team, but many team members had outstanding days individually.  Two of the unrated players, Tyler and Andrei, astounded all by going 4-1 and placing third and fourth in the division.  In addition, one of the more experienced players, Ben, also went 4-1 and many of the other team members went 3-2.  Everyone had an excellent tournament and perhaps, with a little more practice, next time we’ll take first.

5 trophies come home with our team on 11/14 in North East, MD!

Just like Dorothy, I feel like I’ve just returned from Oz!  It was great to be home in time to drop off the Johnnies for their class (Jonathan finally finshed his paper on the way home – wahoo) and pick up the girls!  The boys were welcomed into school and archery class  with questions and hearty congratualtions.  It was a very sweet homecoming and we are all VERY glad to be back (laundry and unpacking aside :)

The tournement was VERY intense and proved difficult for us in the last two rounds.  In our 7pm Saturday night round, we finshed 0-5 (ouch), but we had kids playing until almost 10pm!  Evan pulled out a half point the night before from an 8th grader rated twice as high as him.  I was so proud of him never giving up even though the guy had him in checkmate MANY times- he finished with 1.5 points.  Our Sunday rounds proved a little better, placing our team 28th in the nation.  Liam finshed 49th in the nation in his bracket with 5 wins and only 2 losses!  Ben and Erik finshed with 3 wins and 4 losses and James finshed with 1/2 point.

It’s hard to understand how difficult each of the half point and full points are to get – there are kids from ALL OVER the country – and look out for those kids from NYC!  Phew – they practice ALOT in the Big Apple, and if you were matched against a New Yorker – forgheetaboutit!

I hope all who have read about our journey this weekend apprecaite how hard these boys, the coaches and parents have worked.  The rewards are immeasurable.   All I know, is that when we left Nashville yesterday, our boys were a little prouder, a little taller and and now have a head full of memories to lift them up when life might want to push them down.
I am so proud of them . . .and yes, I did cry :)

Lids aside – We are doing GREAT!  Ben is now rated 8th in the NATION – what?  That’s crazy!  We had a semi-successful round – some wins, some losses – MANY LESSONS LEARNED!  After this afternoon’s 2 pm round, we met at the pool – a crystal oasis after being inside a convention center for two days!

Vincent as lifegaurd and chess coach - he yelled phrases like, "Stop having fun" and "No sitting on the side of the pool!" - the scary thing is, everyone listened!

We’re getting ready to prepare for the 7pm round.  Coaches warming up the kids and we’re having parents-time in the adjoining room.  Our party includes olives, brie and NO STRATEGY!  It has been an amazing experience for our boys (and us) thus far!  More later after our next round – we miss you, Joshua and Stefan!

Who is that Chess Hoodlum?

Who is that Chess Hoodlum?Hello everyone this is Tait, guest blogging for Susan. I got here last night at 11PM. My plane flight had a very airsick young lady on it, what a blast! The kids have all finished the first of three rounds today, and they are holding up well. The team has 8 points. Ben Elstner is undefeated, Liam and Erik are both 2 and 1. This hotel is beautiful, and everything is right here. There is a lot of downtime at chess tournaments and Nationals is the worst. Todays rounds are at 9AM, 2PM and 7PM. The biggest challenge is keeping the boys motivated throughout a 15 hour day during which they have to play 6 hours of hardcore chess. We began the day with an elevator ride to the lobby during which we yelled everytime the doors opened, this garnered us some strange looks, but it amused us.Downtime at Nationals

We are off now to round four (the second for today). We will write again later.

With a twangy phone call to wake us up, we are up and practicing.  First round at 9 am.  Sunny and 70 today – a beautiful day to CRUSH!  Tait arrived late last night – it will be nice to have his support and wit throughout this long day.  Coach Dave Scheidt (Liam’s first coach from St. Andrew’s) is here, too.  It’s great having him, his son and a few other familiar friends around.  It’s a great day for chess . . . :)

More later . . .

Evan just finished his second round - Isn’t it bedtime?  He drew (tied in chess lingo) and got half a point against a kid rated DOUBLE his rating.  Liam and Ben also won adding 2.5 more points to our total.  I am now pondering (as Liam and Evan play MORE chess on the floor by their bed ) what Nashville star I want to call me for my wake-up call – Trace Adkins, Vince Gill or Kellie Pickler . . .?  No joke, I can request a message from Wynonna to wake us up in the morning – only in Nashville!  Tomorrow it’s three rounds at 9, 2 and 7.  A special guest blog from Vincent -stay tuned :)

Goodnight y’all,

Susan

We’re in Nashville!  After a 14 hour adventure, we landed in Nashville last night during a TORNADO WARNING!  Funnels were spotted touching down all around us and people had been evacuated to the BASEMENT of the hotel.  After a final 30 minute white-knuckle drive (my shift, of course), we arrived!

This morning our five-member team (Liam, Evan, James, Ben and Erik) played Grand Master Shabilov - HOW COOL (see pictures below)!  What a warm up for our first round at 1:00 today when Erik, Liam and Ben CRUSHED their opponent and James drew a bye.   After an afternoon in the pool we are getting ready to practice and have pizza to prepare for our second round at 7 pm.  Right now our team is TIED FOR FIRST (momentary but still glorious) :)

Stay tuned for the next update (minus the funnels)!

St. Anne’s School Chess team finishes 8th in State!

This past weekend, our chess team participated in the Maryland State Elementary Chess Championships in Towson, MD. This two-day competition featured seven members of our team.    Our Varsity team (Evan Judge, Liam Judge, Joshua Walbridge and Ben Elstner) won 8th place in the state, playing against kids grades K-5 rated over 600.  Stefan Waczynski (a homeschooler who plays for St. Anne’s) won 7th place in the under 600 individual competition, crushing his first 4 games and losing only to the person who won first place!  Also competing for St. Anne’s were JT Dolan and James Triebwasser.

St. Anne's chess team member and homeschooler, Stefan Waczynski, hold his seventh place State Champion trophy with coaches Christine Fuller, Jonathan English and Vincent Tavani

ROAD TRIP!

This Thursday (4/2), five members from our chess team are travelling to Nashville, TN for US Scholastic Chess National Championships!    Members from our traveling team include Erik Saderholm, James Wells, Ben Elstner and my two sons, Liam and Evan Judge.

Accompanying my family on the twelve hour odyssey in our Suburban will be our four St. John’s coaches – Christine, Vincent, Jonathan and Alex.  They will keep you updated (and laughing) with blog posts from along our journey and throughout the weekend.

Friday morning, our team will play simultaneous chess games against Alexander Shabalov, US Chess Champion and American grandmaster.   Our boys will then go on to compete against over 2000 kids from around the country (grades K-8) for seven rounds of tournament play.

Check back starting Thursday night for humorous glimpses of this Chess Road Trip Adventure!

See ya’ll in Nashville!

Susan
