The St. Anne’s School Chess Team returned victorious last weekend from Northeast Middle School, bringing back three individual trophies and two team trophies. Under the sound of heavy gunfire (from a nearby shooting range) in this Soviet Era school, the team persevered, pulling out win after win, round after round. They all made short work of their opponents for the first three rounds (that is everyone except Erik, who took his sweet time dismantling his opponents), and the Under-500 team pulled ahead. But the day took its toll, and by the fourth round everyone was struggling to keep it together. Both teams fell behind with little hope of placing. They needed to have a big comeback if they wanted to get anywhere near those trophies.
After a few last-minute words from their coaches, the team came back with a very strong last round to give the Under-500 team 14 points and the Under-900 team 11 points This was just enough to get third place for the Under-500 team and fourth place for the Under-900 team. Not only did we do well as a team, but many team members had outstanding days individually. Two of the unrated players, Tyler and Andrei, astounded all by going 4-1 and placing third and fourth in the division. In addition, one of the more experienced players, Ben, also went 4-1 and many of the other team members went 3-2. Everyone had an excellent tournament and perhaps, with a little more practice, next time we’ll take first.
